Beach Volleyball Set to Open Season in New Orleans at Green Wave Invitational

NEW ORLEANS- The Georgia State beach volleyball team will open the spring 2022 season in New Orleans this weekend at the Green Wave Invitational. Coming off a stellar spring 2021 campaign that saw the Panthers finish 23-13 and advance to the CCSA Championship Final, the 'Sandy Panthers' enter the season as a new member of Conference USA with hopes of securing a conference title and making a return trip to Gulf Shores for the NCAA National Championships.

GSU will kick off the weekend of tournament play on Friday, Feb. 25 against host Tulane at 10:30 a.m. ET followed by LSU at 4 p.m. ET. The Panthers will have a quick turnaround on Saturday, Feb. 26 with matches against Spring Hill College at 10:30 a.m. ET and Nicholls State at 1:15 p.m. ET. The matches are set to be played at the White Sands Volleyball Courts.

Having bested Tulane in 10 of 12 meetings all-time and currently maintaining a seven-match win streak against the foe, GSU will look to continue its success against The Green Wave in the season-opening tournament. With the Panthers facing Nicholls on the back end of the weekend competition, Saturday will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools. GSU is also 5-8 in matchups against LSU, and a perfect 4-0 when facing Spring Hill.

With C-USA adding beach volleyball as a sponsored sport for the first time in the 2021-2022 season, GSU joins fellow conference newcomers Coastal Carolina and Louisiana Monroe as well as participating C-USA member institutions Florida Atlantic, Southern Miss, UAB and FIU in opening spring competition with the new beach volleyball conference. With the exception of Coastal Carolina, each program previously competed as members of the CCSA.

Entering the spring 2022 season with an experienced core of veterans that includes five seniors, four graduate transfers and a fifth year, GSU's lineup will include three players nominated for preseason all-conference honors. Among those under consideration are fifth year senior Eden Hawes as well as seniors Maddy Delmonte and Kelly Dorn. Hawes and Delmonte partnered in the top flight for the Panthers en route to a conference title appearance last spring, while Dorn posted a 12-6 overall record and downed nationally-ranked opposition nine times.

Preseason all-conference awards will be announced Friday morning, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. ET. Follow @GSUBeachVB on social media for coverage of the Panthers' season opening tournament as well as the team's spring 2022 campaign moving forward.
