Panthers in Good Form as Sun Belt Play Begins

ATLANTA -- Unbeaten in its last five matches, Georgia State goes on the road this week to begin conference action at Louisiana Thursday and at Texas State Sunday.

The Panthers and Ragin' Cajuns will meet for the first time since 2019 Thursday at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN+. GSU is 4-1-2 all-time vs. Louisiana and won 2-0 in the most recent match. 

Georgia State then heads further west to face Texas State at 1 p.m. ET Sunday in San Marcos. Sunday's contest will also be streamed on ESPN+. GSU is 3-5-1 vs. the Bobcats and beat Texas State 1-0 in their last meeting in 2019. 

The Panthers have won four of their last five matches, including a 6-2 victory over Presbyterian College last Sunday.

  • 13 different Panthers have scored goals this season. Five Panthers are tied for the team lead with two goals each. 
  • GSU ranks second in the Sun Belt and Top 50 in the country with 44 total goals. 
  • Four freshmen have recorded goals for GSU. Brooklynn Fugel has two and Bree Barley, Alondra Nieves and Gabby West have one each. 
  • Georgia State is 5-2-1 in 2021 and 15-5-3 since the start of the 2020 season. The team has made three straight Sun Belt Championship Semifinals. 
  • The squad has eight returning starters from the 10-3-2 (Third best win percentage in program history) team a year ago, including Sun Belt Freshman of the Year Maddie Johnston and All-Sun Belt honorees Jimena Cabrero, Kamree Holloway, Jolie Ryff, and Jaddah Foos.
  • 2020 was GSU's winningest season since 1998 as the team secured the No. 2 seed in the East at the Sun Belt Conference Championship.
  • The defense allowed the second fewest goals in the Sun Belt Conference last year (16).
  • GSU was tied for the most Preseason All-Sun Belt selections with three (Jimena Cabrero, Kamree Holloway, Jolie Ryff).
  • Sophomore Maddie Johnston led the team in goals last season as a freshman. Jimena Cabrero led the team in shots. 
  • Jimena Cabrero has seven career game-winning goals which is tied for 8th in program history.
