Panthers to Kick Off Season Thursday vs. Mercer

ATLANTA -- Georgia State hosts Mercer at 7 p.m. Thursday on ESPN+ to start the 2021 regular season.

GSU is coming off a historical 2020 campaign that saw the Panthers in a third straight Sun Belt Championship Semifinal. The squad returns eight starters from the 10-3-2 team a year ago, including Sun Belt Freshman of the Year Maddie Johnston and All-Sun Belt honorees Jimena Cabrero, Kamree Holloway, Jolie Ryff, and Jaddah Foos.

The Panthers played two exhibitions last week in preparation for the season. Johnston scored a pair of goals in a 2-1 win over Stetson and GSU and Jacksonville State ended in a scoreless draw.

GSU and Mercer faced off twice last season with Georgia State claiming both contests 2-1. The Panthers and Bears opened the 2020 season in Macon and were tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation. Brooke Hart, who was playing in her first collegiate game, scored the game-winner just three minutes into overtime.

In the second meeting of the season at Center Parc Stadium on Oct. 15, Grace Kiser scored just minutes into the game. After Mercer pulled even later in the first half, Johnston scored the game-winner just before halftime.

Thursday's season-opener can be streamed on ESPN+ with live stats available here. It will be the first official contest played in GSU's new soccer facility located at 188 MLK Jr. Dr. SE.

Admission to the contest is free to the public.

Following Thursday's game the Panthers will travel north to Chattanooga to face the Mocs on Sunday at 7 p.m. on ESPN+. GSU has won three in a row against Chattanooga dating back to 2017.
