ATLANTA- Beach volleyball junior Bailey Hatchett was named an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar by the magazine Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.
Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education and his love for the game of tennis, the award honors minority student-athletes who standout in the classroom, on the field, and in the community. To be eligible, student-athletes must possess a 3.20 minimum GPA, be at least a sophomore in academic standing, and an active member in the university.
As Georgia State's first student-athlete Presidential Scholar, Hatchett has excelled in the classroom. She has been named to the President's List for three of her four semesters at Georgia State and Dean's List once. Additionally, she has been named to the CCSA honor roll.
Hatchett is pursuing a double major in finance and Spanish. Upon graduation she would like to attend graduate school for international business. Eventually she would like to work for the international department of a company and live outside the United States.
A native of North Carolina, Hatchett has made the Atlanta community her home and has given back during her time at GSU. Earlier this year she was named an Institute for Sport and Social Justice Playmaker of the Month. During one of her first-year honors classes, she decided to develop a partnership between the Honors College, GSU Athletic Department, and local elementary schools. In her sophomore year this initiative expanded to middle and high schools. The program focuses on tutoring, mentoring, and celebrating local youth. She is working with local schools in hopes that she can continue making an impact with local youth during this unique year.
