Court and Beach Volleyball Programs Both Earn the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award

ATLANTA- Georgia State volleyball and beach volleyball squads continue to earn recognition for their accomplishments in the classroom. Both teams received the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award and spots on the AVCA Academic Honor Roll, announced on Monday afternoon.

The award, launched in 1992-1993 academic year, recognizes teams with a cumulative GPA of 3.3. Even with a chaotic and different ending to the school year, both of our teams performed well above this requirement. The beach volleyball team finished the academic year with a department best 3.96 average GPA. While the court squad concluded the year with a 3.70 GPA.

The beach volleyball team earned the team award for the seventh consecutive year, the most of any DI beach volleyball programs. The No. 18 Sandy Panthers recorded the highest GPA in department history in the fall with a 3.99. All 16 team members earned individual Georgia State academic honors throughout the year and landed on the CCSA Conference Honor Roll. Georgia State made the AVCA Honor Roll by being one of the top-15 GPAs in collegiate beach volleyball.

"We are honored to get to work with such motivated and intelligent student-athletes," said head beach volleyball coach Beth Van Fleet. "These young women are making the most of their time at Georgia State by giving their best effort in the classroom and in the sand. We are particularly grateful for an outstanding academic support team."

Court volleyball received the team award for the fourth straight year and fifth overall. In addition, the AVCA Honor Roll recognized the top-46 GPAs among DI court volleyball teams in the country. All fifteen players on the 2019 roster earned individual Georgia State academic accolades for at least one semester during the year for their academic performance. In addition, senior Morgan Hash was named Third Team CoSIDA Academic All-American at the conclusion of the 2019 court season.

"Academic success is no longer a goal. It is a standard that is driven by our players," said volleyball head coach Sally Polhamus. "We are excited to celebrate their hard work and success in the classroom for both their Fall and Spring semesters. We appreciate the continued support and resources Georgia State consistently provides.".
