Becky Tresham: Representing Her Country

Growing up Becky Tresham idolized her sister. Anything her sister did she wanted to do next. When her sister joined the high school volleyball team, Becky, ten years old at the time, also wanted to play volleyball. From the moment she tried it, she was hooked. Today she is not only a member of the Georgia State beach volleyball program, but has also secured a spot on the Canadian Summer Program National Team.

The sophomore tried out for the team in November. The tryout was a three-day process where anyone could participate. Each day different skill sets were tested. The first day Tresham was tested on her jump, speed, and stamina. The second day was all about basic skills such as ball control, serving, and passing. The final test was a day full of game simulations.

Tresham had to wait a week to receive the news that she made the team. She was one of the youngest people competing for a spot, and she was not confident she would make the team.

"I was competing against many athletes that I looked up to as role models when I was little," said Tresham. " I went to the tryout without the expectation I would make it and with the mindset that I was going to give it all I had. It was a great opportunity and experience to know that I am able to compete against the older athletes."

So far her most memorable experience representing her country was when she competed in the Norceca trials with partner Molly McBain, who plays for FSU, a fellow CCSA program. The duo defeated the No.1 ranked team en route to taking home the silver.

Much like the rest of the world, Tresham's summer plans are up in the air. The Canadian National Team has pushed back training from May to June. Events, such as this year's Norceca qualifier, have already been canceled due to COVID-19. Tresham is uncertain what events she will get to compete in, if any, but she continues to train and be grateful for this opportunity.

Tresham's journey to Georgia State began with her unofficial visit in 2016, and she immediately fell in love. She enjoyed the culture Atlanta had to offer. She bonded with the older girls on the team. Most importantly, head coach Beth Van Fleet made Georgia State feel like her second home.

Since starting her collegiate career Tresham has partnered with senior Maddie Gordon for 46 matches. The pair has won 36 of those, primarily on courts four and five. This season the duo went on an impressive seven match winning-streak, defeating pairs from No. 7 Stetson, No. 10 FIU, and No. 18 FAU.

"Becky has truly been such an amazing partner, and one that I have cherished the most in my beach volleyball career," said Gordon. "Her grit, commitment, and energy is so contagious on the court. Knowing I had the opportunity to finish my career with her by my side means the world to me."
