Six Goals By Six Different Panthers Push GSU to Semifinals

Georgia State beat Troy 6-1 Wednesday in the quarterfinals.

FOLEY, Ala. – Georgia State was dominant from kickoff Wednesday night, defeating Troy 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Sun Belt Conference Championships in Foley, Ala.

The #2 seed Panthers didn't waste anytime as senior Lily Barron scored off an assist from Jimena Cabrero just 10 minutes into the contest.

"We talked about starting fast and playing the way we want to play," head coach Ed Joyce said after the game. "I wanted to make sure we started the tournament off on the right foot and we did just that tonight."

Just moments after Barron's opening goal, Cabrero launched a rocket from just outside the box into the upper right corner of the Troy goal to make it 2-0 Panthers in the 12th minute.

The Panthers did not let up as Maggie Hanusek made it 3-0 in the final minute of the first half, her second of the season.

Troy got on the board in the 69th minute but Jocelyn Jones answered in the 71st with her first goal of the season off a great assist from Eva Diez Lois to make it 4-1.

GSU added two more goals in the closing minutes from freshmen Brooke Hart and Maddie Johnston. For Johnston, it was her team-leading 5th goal of the season.

The Panthers' six goals is the most scored in a conference tournament contest since GSU defeated Centenary 7-1 in the 1997 TAAC Tournament.

Georgia State advances to the semifinals for the third season in a row and will face the top seed from the West Division in Arkansas State Friday night at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
