Hanusek Delivers Game-Winner as GSU Defeats Troy

Maggie Hanusek scored in the 85th minute to give GSU a 1-0 win over Troy Friday night.

ATLANTA -- Maggie Hanusek scored her first goal as a Panther Friday night at Center Parc Stadium as the Panthers defeated Troy 1-0.

With nothing separating the two sides in the 85th minute, Hanusek made a run into the box and settled a cross into the box from Jolie Ryff. Hanusek turned her defender and beat Troy's goalie with a low shot at the near post.

It was the first goal as a Panther for the graduate transfer from Appalachian State.

Prior to Hanusek's game-winner, Georgia State dominated possession for most of the contest and out-shot the Trojans 23-3 with 10 of those shots on target compared to one for Troy.

"It wasn't our best shot on goal in the game, but the play to get us there was exactly what we've been working on," head coach Ed Joyce said. "Sometimes when you do things the right way long enough the game rewards you."

The win extends GSU's unbeaten streak to eight games with just two contests remaining in the regular season. GSU improves to 6-1-2 in Sun Belt play setting up a finale Sunday against first-place South Alabama. With a win, Georgia State clinches the top seed in the Sun Belt East Division heading into the Sun Belt Championships Nov. 4-8.

The Panthers beat the Jaguars 1-0 earlier this season in Mobile, the first win for GSU there since 2003.

"They understand the importance of the match. We've been talking about controlling our own destiny and that will be our mindset Sunday," Joyce said. "We need to control our play and keep doing things the way we've been doing them to get to this point."
