Senior Spotlight: Zorae Tomlin

Zorae is a film and journalism double major.

The GSU women's soccer Senior Spotlight series will feature each of the team's seniors throughout the remainder of the 2020 season.

Zorae Through a Different Lens

Zorae Tomlin is a junior on the field but is on track to graduate in the Spring with a double major in film and journalism.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Zorae and her family moved to Atlanta when Zorae was still a baby. She chose Georgia State after graduating from North Cobb H.S. due to GSU's film program with the proximity to home being an added bonus.

Soccer was always in the plans for Zorae. Her father, Ray, played professional soccer for the Colorado Foxes, Hampton Road Mariners and the Atlanta Silverbacks.

Zorae's mother, Zoie, recalls one game where Zorae ran onto the field towards her dad causing play to be halted. After her father's playing career ended he went right into coaching.

He was Zorae's first coach and has been coaching her ever since.

While soccer came from her dad, Zorae's interests in film and photography comes from her mother.

"I've also always wanted to do film because my mom and I would always watch old movies together," Zorae said. "That's definitely one of the reasons it's something I'm passionate about."

Some of her favorite memories from her time at Georgia State involve her film production classes. Projects that she's enjoyed are the hands-on ones, including when she had to walk around campus and interview random people.

"I've always been obsessed with art," Zorae said. "When I was younger, I wanted to be an animator because I was always drawing and still do. But film and photography allow me to capture something and still show a story behind it."

Her favorite films are Do the Right Thing, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Rush Hour.

After graduation she plans to pursue a career in entertainment and Atlanta, or the 'Hollywood of the South', is a great place to get started.
