GSU Earns Senior Day Victory over App State, Finishes Regular Season on Four-Game Win Streak

Panthers end regular season on four-match win streak

ATLANTA – Georgia State women's soccer sent its four seniors off with one final victory at the GSU Soccer Complex, as goals from Brooke Shank and Jimena Cabrero lifted the Panthers to a 2-1 Senior Day win over Appalachian State Sunday afternoon and gave GSU a four-match win streak to finish the regular season.

Georgia State improved to 8-8-2 overall and 5-4-1 in the Sun Belt Conference, guaranteeing itself a spot in the conference tournament. The Panthers will learn their seed and first-round opponent after the conclusion of the Little Rock-Arkansas State match on Tuesday night.

"Our team has really been working hard for each other – that's been our mindset," GSU head coach Ed Joyce said. "We'll try to keep things rolling and keep playing for each other and now we'll get some time off before the tournament but if we keep working and improving, I'm excited for us moving forward."

GSU's first goal of the day came in the 12th minute via Cabrero who latched onto a stray ball following a mistake from an App State defender. The Santander, Spain, native took two touches and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner for her fifth goal of the season to give the Panthers an early edge.

Georgia State dominated the first half with five total shots, two of which were on target, while the Mountaineers were held to just one shot after 45 minutes of play.

The second half started with a strong Panther performance as GSU earned multiple corners and shots in quick succession. The final corner of the game for the blue and white resulted in a goal when the ball fell to Shank on the edge of the six-yard box and she struck a shot into the goal following a quick turn to beat multiple defenders. It was Shank's third goal in her last four contests.

Appalachian State began to press after conceding a second goal and created multiple scoring chances, with its one goal of the game coming off a deep freekick from Ava Dawson in the 86th minute.

GSU keeper Kendra Clarke collected two saves and improved to 8-4-1 between the posts this season.

The 2019 Sun Belt Conference Tournament begins Nov. 6 and concludes Nov. 10. The tournament will be held at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex in Foley, Ala. All matches of the Sun Belt Tournament will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
