COLUMBIA, S.C. – Georgia State's sand volleyball team swept the opening day action at the College of Charleston Tournament, beating Tulane 3-2 in the morning and shutting out CofC 5-0 in the afternoon.
No. 7 Georgia State (14-1) set a new record for longest winning streak after beating Tulane and have now won eight in a row. The previous long was six. The Panthers also matched last season's win total with the pair of wins. The Panthers play the first match of the day on Saturday, meeting the Green Wave at 8 a.m.
The Panthers beat Tulane 3-2 for the second time this season. Georgia State won the fourth and fifth matches, but lost the No. 1 match along with the No. 3 match. Milani Pickering and Majda Dostalova grinded out a victory at No. 2 to solidify the win.
Georgia State swept the host Cougars to go 2-0 on the day. Three flights went to three sets, but GSU emerged on top in each one. Nina Interwies and Kate Rawls won at the top spot 21-18, 18-21, 15-8. Interwies improved to 17-2 with the win. Dostalova and Pickering won in straight sets at No. 2 while Sara Olivova and Jansen Button rallied after dropping their first set to win in three at No. 3. Georgia State finished the sweep with wins from Jessica Fourspring and Alexis Townsend at No. 4 and Molly Smestad and Alexis Elmurr at No. 5.
Georgia State faces a pair of Atlantic Sun teams on Sunday, going up against Stetson at 11 a.m. and Jacksonville at 2 p.m. The Panthers return home for the Southeast Sand Slam on April 3 and 4 at the GSU Sand Courts.
