Two Late Second-Half Goals down Panthers

MONROE, La. – In a match where three goals were scored in the second half, the Georgia State women's soccer team was defeated by UL Monroe 2-1 Sunday afternoon at the ULM Soccer Complex in Monroe, La.

Callie O'Connor scored in the 54th minute to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. However, the Warhawks scored in the 78th and 80th minutes to come from behind for the win.

“We worked hard but not hard enough,” head coach Derek Leader said. “We were not consistent enough today and the result was a gut check. However, with that said UL Monroe deserved the win.”

GSU went on the attack first with a trio of shots in the first 16 minutes but could not find the back of the net.

  • Lauren Harriman had the first chance in the 3rd minute but her effort was wide.
  • In the 7th minute Whitney Ravan fired a shot on goal but it was saved by ULM's Katherine Werther.
  • Ashley Nagy then had a chance in the 16th minute but Werther again made the save.

The Warhawks first chance was in the 31st minute but Amanda Borstelmann's shot was off target. Neither team created another scoring chance in the final 14 minutes and the first half ended with the score tied 0-0.

  • The Panthers held a 3-2 edge in both shots and corner kicks through the first 45 minutes of action.

UL Monroe threatened first in the second half forcing GSU goalkeeper Brie Haynes to make a save in the 53rd minute.

One minute later Georgia State grabbed a 1-0 lead on Callie O'Connor first career goal for the Panthers. Harriman took the ball down the right flank and sent a cross into the box. O'Connor was waiting and she slotted the ball into the bottom left corner with a hard and low shot.

Over the next 20 minutes, Haynes was forced to make four saves to protect the Panthers' 1-0 lead.

  • First she denied Warhawk Mary Lembo in the 55th minute.
  • In the 62nd minute Kylie Kukowski fired a shot on goal but the GSU keeper was there for the stop.
  • Haynes was then called into action again in the 67th minute to deny Jenna Pillon's effort.
  • Finally Haynes saved Karlea Fehr's shot in the 73rd minute to keep the score 1-0.

UL Monroe tied the match 1-1 in the 78th minute when Fehr beat Haynes. Antonia Land crossed the ball to Fehr, who scored with a shot into the top corner. Less than two minutes later the Warhawks took a 2-1 lead when Land pounced on a loose ball and found the back of the net.

In the final 10 minutes Georgia State had two chances to tie the match but could not beat Werther.

  • First Kenzie Winters had a chance but her shot was off target.
  • Then Jenna Moore fired a free kick on goal but Werther made a great diving save to deny the Panther defender.

The match ended 2-1 in favor of UL Monroe, and Georgia State wrapped up its first weekend of conference play with a 1-1 record after beating UL Lafayette on Friday.

  • Overall the Warhawks held a 12-9 shot advantage, including a 10-6 edge in the second half.
  • The Panthers took one more corner kick in the match (6-5).
  • GSU drops to 3-6-3 this season and 1-1-0 in Sun Belt play.
  • Georgia State's next match is Friday, Oct. 3 against UALR. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the GSU Soccer Complex.
