Georgia State Women's Soccer Ties School Record in 1-0 Win over Mercer

ATLANTA – Ashley Nagy scored and Brie Haynes recorded her fourth-consecutive shutout to tie a school record as the Georgia State Women's soccer team defeated Mercer 1-0 Friday night at the GSU Soccer Complex.

  • The Panthers have not allowed a goal in more than 438 minutes
  • GSU is unbeaten in its last four matches with two wins and two draws.
  • Georgia State has recorded four-straight shutouts for the third time in program history and the first time since 2003.
  • GSU will look to break this record on Sunday, Sept. 21 against UT Martin at the GSU Soccer Complex at 1 p.m.

In the first half, Mercer outshot GSU 8-4 and forced Haynes to make a pair of saves in the first 20 minutes to keep the match scoreless.

  • In the 11th minute, Washida Blackman found herself one-on-one with Haynes but the sophomore keeper made a great save to deny the Bear forward.
  • Six minutes later Lauren Gassie had another chance for Mercer but Haynes made another excellent save to keep the match tied 0-0.

GSU responded with a chance of its own in the 20th minute but Bear goalkeeper Maggie Cropp saved Nagy's effort.

In the 33rd minute the Panthers nearly grabbed a 1-0 lead when Whitney Ravan beat Cropp but her shot hit the right post. The rebound fell to Lindsay Leonardo but her effort was just wide of the left post.

Neither team managed another shot on target in the final 12 minutes and the first half ended with the score tied 0-0.

Mercer went on the attack early in the second half with a trio of shots in the first 10 minutes but none were on target. The Bears were controlling the game but it was Georgia State who struck first on a quick counter attack in the 57th minute.

Amanda Bruemmer won the ball in the Panthers' defensive third and made a charging run towards the midfield circle. She passed the ball wide to Callie O'Connor who played a one-time pass over the Mercer defense that fell perfectly to Nagy. Nagy then took one touch towards goal before calmly curving the ball around Cropp and into the bottom right corner to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

The Bears responded with a chance in the 62nd but Haynes saved Annie Barrett's header. One minute later Ravan fired a shot on target but Cropp denied the senior to keep the GSU lead at one.

Mercer's best chance of the second half came in the 78th minute after a pair of corner kicks. After a deflection, the ball fell to Blackman at the top of the six-yard box. However, Haynes made an incredible save on the striker's point-blank effort to protect the Panthers' advantage.

Georgia State controlled possession over the final 12 minutes to secure the 1-0 shutout win.
