BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The No. 10 Georgia State sand volleyball team finished its sophomore season going 1-1 this weekend. The Panthers lost to UAB 3-2, but ended the season with a 5-0 win over Tulane.
Georgia State finishes the the season with a 14-5 record and a Top 10 ranking in the AVCA national poll.
In the UAB match, Sara Olivova and Jansen Button, playing at the No. 1 flight for the first time this season, lost in three sets to AVCA National Championship-bound pair of Kiriana Hirini and Bethanie Thomas 21-19, 16-21, 15-12. At the second flight, Sara Olivova and Jansen Button defeated Sam Serley and Alison Woods 21-13, 21-17. At the No. 4 flight, Sarah Agnew and Delaney Rohan defeated Becca Howard and Gabby Deshotel 21-14, 21-13.
Georgia State then faced Tulane to close out the season. The Panthers won at every flight. At the No. 1 flight, Olivova and Button defeated Tea Juric and Jackie Wegner 21-17, 21-13. In their final match of their Georgia State careers, graduate student Moriah Bellissimo and senior Katie Madewell defeated Annie Shurtz and Amber Bennett 21-9, 21-12.
At the No. 3 flight, Agnew and Delaney Rohan defeated Hannah Holmes and Anna Wruck 16-21, 21-17, 26-24. Jessica Fourspring and Milani Pickering, at the No. 4 flight, defeated Courtney Liddle and Olivia Utt 21-19, 21-18. Rounding out the lineup for the Panthers was the No. 5 flight of Molly Smestad and Wilson, who defeated Miah Dirrell and Sarah Strasner 21-12, 21-16.
The Panthers will lose just two players, Bellissimo and Madewell, as Georgia State sand volleyball heads into its third year. Georgia State will return 13 players, nine of whom will be upperclassmen.
