Sand Volleyball Opens Season With 2-0 Record

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Georgia State sand volleyball team opened its 2014 campaign with two wins on the first day of the UNF Tournament. The Panthers defeated FAU 5-0 and Jacksonville 3-2. 

In the first match of the season, the Panthers faced FAU and swept the Owls 5-0. At the first flight, freshman Delaney Rohan and graduate student Moriah Bellissimo won in straight sets in their debut for GSU, 21-15, 21-13, over Natalie Fraley and Darija Sataric. 

At the second flight, returnees Sara Olivova and Jansen Button won 21-12, 21-14 over Lauren D'Amato and Beth Schoaff. At the third flight, sophomore Katelyn Rawls and freshman Sarah Agnew defeated Megan Knapp and Megan Mandy 21-15, 21-10. Sophomore Milani Pickering and freshman Natalie Wilson, at the fourth flight, defeated Gabby Pyle and Andie Galinis in three sets, 21-16, 19-21, 18-16. Rounding out match, freshman Jessica Fourspring and sophomore Alexis Townsend won 21-18, 21-11 over Krista Tekavec and Lexi Rhein. 

In the Panthers' second match, the Panthers won 3-2 over the Dolphins. The second, third and fourth flights came away with wins, while the first and fifth flights both lost in three sets. 

Button and Olivova, in the second flight, won in three sets against Kendall Courtney and Niatha Cullen. The pair moved to 2-0 on the season with a 15-21, 21-19, 15-11 win. At the third flight, Rawls and Agnew defeated Gabrielle Roman and Mayara Presteo 21-16, 21-18. Pickering and Wilson, in the fourth flight, defeated Emily Laskelle and Hanna McMahon 21-13, 21-6.

Rohan and Bellissimo, in the first flight, lost to Sammie Strausbaugh 18-21, 21-16, 15-9. In the fifth flight, Fourspring and Townsend lost to Alyssa Robertson and Jizzian Gesauldo 11-21, 21-16, 15-13. 

The Panthers will return to the courts tomorrow for a match with FIU at 8:30 a.m. and Louisiana-Monroe at 11:30 a.m.
