Panthers Battle From Behind to Draw UALR 1-1

ATLANTA – Behind a match-tying goal by Whitney Ravan in the 87th minute, the Georgia State women's soccer team came from behind to draw UALR 1-1 in double overtime on Friday night at the GSU Soccer Complex in Atlanta, Ga.

Over the first 30 minutes UALR took the first five shots of the match.

  • Louise Kallin had a chance in the 3rd minute but her header was wide of the left post.
  • Ten minutes later Alyson Rohane tried her luck but her effort was high.
  • In the 17th minute, Kallin was again on the ball but GSU goalkeeper Christa Fox made the save.
  • Three minutes later, Rohane had her second chance but she was also denied by Fox.
  • The final chance of the first half hour fell to Kallin but her shot was off target.

Georgia State's first shot of the half came in the final seconds. Ravan fired a shot on goal but UALR keeper Sara Cavanagh made the save.

  • After 45 minutes the Trojans held a 7-1 shot advantage and both teams took one corner kick.

UALR had the first chance of the second half but Amanda Wilkinson's effort was off target in the 49th minute. The Panthers threatened 10 minutes later but Ravan's shot was saved by Cavanagh.

GSU continued to attack in search of an opening goal but it was the Trojans who had the next quality scoring chance. Rohane fired a shot on target in the 69th minute but Fox was there to make the save to keep the match scoreless.

UALR did grab a 1-0 lead in the 79th minute when Kallin scored her seventh goal of the season. Hayley Fowle picked out Kallin with a long cross from the left wing to the far post, and the forward was able to head it past Fox and into the net.

The Panthers had a trio of chances over the next five minutes as Georgia State pushed for an equalizer.

  • First Callie O'Connor did great work to create space in the 18-yard box but her attempt was just wide of the right post in the 80th minute.
  • Four minutes later Kenzie Winters tried a long shot but it was blocked by a UALR defender.
  • Jenna More then had a chance in the 85th minute but her powerful shot was right of the target.

GSU's pressure finally paid off in the 87th minute when the Panthers tied the match 1-1. A Trojan defender attempted to head the ball out of danger, but Ravan anticipated the play and pounced on the loose ball. She then chipped Cavanagh to find the back of the net for her third goal of the season.

UALR had one final chance in regulation but the shot was off target and the team's prepared for overtime.

  • Both teams attempted five shots in the second half and UALR had one more corner (3-2).
  • Over 90 minutes the Trojans outshot the Panthers 12-6.

Two minutes into the first period of extra time UALR's Mikayla Uyokpeyi tested Fox but the junior keeper made the save. GSU had two chances over the final eight minutes but both were off target.

Georgia State started the second overtime on the front foot when Kylie Ruffule forced Cavanagh to make a save after just 43 seconds.

The Panthers nearly clinch the win in the 106th minute following a Margaret Bruemmer corner kick. The ball fell dangerously to Ravan inside the six-yard box but the senior slipped on the wet surface and the chance was lost.

GSU had one final opportunity to secure the victory in the final minute when Taina Anglade fired a shot towards the lower right corner. The ball was bound for the back of the net but a UALR defender was able to make a goal-line save to ensure that the match ended in a 1-1 tie.

  • Overall, the Trojans held a 14-10 shot advantage and both teams had five shots on target.
  • Each team had four corner kicks over 110 minutes of action.
  • This was the Panthers fifth overtime contest of the season and the fourth that ended in a draw.
  • Georgia State returns to the field on Sunday, Oct. 5 to host Arkansas State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the GSU Soccer Complex.
