Ravan Scores her Eighth, GSU Falls to Appalachian State

ATLANTA – On a cold Friday night, the Georgia State women's soccer team was defeated by Appalachian State 2-1 at the GSU Soccer Complex. After a scoreless first half, the teams combined to score three goals in 15 minutes but the Panthers came up short on the scoreboard.

GSU controlled the majority of the first half and went on the attack early in the first half with four shots in the first seven minutes.

  • Jenna Moore had the Panthers best chance but her header hit the right post in the 4th minute.
  • Whitney Ravan followed up with a header off the rebound but it was wide right.

Taina Anglade then had a pair of chances for Georgia State over the next 15 minutes.

  • Her first was saved by Mountaineer goalkeeper Megan Roberson in the 12th minute.
  • Then her second effort was headed off the goal line by an Appalachian State defender in the 17th minute to keep the match tied 0-0.

The Mountaineers first quality chance was in the 33rd minute but GSU goalkeeper Christa Fox easily saved Lindsey Tully's effort. Appalachian State had another opportunity in the 43rd minute but Fox was there to deny Jenna Caudle.

  • After 45 minutes, the Panthers had a 9-4 shot advantage.
  • Both teams had two saves and attempted three corner kicks in the first half.

The Mountaineers jumped in front 1-0 less than one minute into the second half when Jane Cline scored her fourth goal of the season.

  • Sam Childress played a dangerous ball into the 18-yard box.
  • Julia Holz was able to head it to Cline, who scored at the near post past Fox.

Holz then had two more chances for Appalachian State over the next four minutes but one shot was high and the other was saved by Fox.

In the 60th minute, Childress doubled the Mountaineers' lead when she redirected Cline's low cross into the back of the net.

However, the 2-0 lead was short lived as Ravan scored her eighth goal of the season 13 second later to pull the Panthers within one.

  • On the ensuing kickoff Georgia State worked the ball down the right flank.
  • Rebecca Copeland was able to find Ravan inside the 18-yard box with a low pass.
  • Then Ravan made a quick turn and fired a powerful shot past Roberson into the lower-left corner.

The final 30 minutes of the match were back and forth as both teams went on the attack.

  • Appalachian State's Holz had the next chance in the 69th minute but Fox made the save.
  • Cline then attempted a long shot for the Mountaineers in the 76th minute but it went harmlessly high.
  • After Appalachian State had a shot blocked, Amanda Bruemmer fired a finesse shot from the left in the 80th minute but it was too high.

The Panthers were unable to create another scoring chance over the final 10 minutes and the Mountaineers secured the 2-1 win.

  • Over 90 minutes, GSU outshot Appalachian State 13-11 but the Mountaineers had more efforts on target (6-4).
  • Neither team attempted a corner kick in the second half.
  • Christa Fox finished with four saves for GSU and Megan Roberson recorded two for Appalachian State.
  • The Panthers return to the field on Sunday, Oct. 26 to host Texas State in the team's regular season finale.
  • Georgia State will honor seniors Nikki Fedele, Eryka Hawkins, Elizabeth Kinsel, Lindsay Leonardo and Whitney Ravan prior to the 1 p.m. kickoff.
