Fox Saves 10, GSU Falls at South Alabama 1-0 Sunday

MOBILE, Ala. – Junior goalkeeper Christa Fox finished with 10 saves for the Georgia State women's soccer team but it was not enough as the Panthers were defeated by Sun Belt leaders South Alabama 1-0 Sunday afternoon in Mobile, Ala.

“There is a reason they are the number one team in the conference right now,” head coach Derek Leader said. “I thought we played very well and I am proud of our efforts. We look forward to finishing off the season next weekend and returning to this field for the conference tournament.”

Rio Hardy had two early chances for the Jaguars in the first minute of the match but the first was blocked and the second was saved by Fox. GSU's first shot was in the seventh minute but Callie O'Connor's effort was high.

Fox denied Hardy again in the 12th minute to keep the match scoreless. The Panthers next shot was in the 23rd minute off a corner kick but Jenna Moore's header was blocked by a South Alabama defender.

Six minutes later the Jaguars grabbed a 1-0 lead when Jordan Duncan found the back of the net with a header. Emily Farrell and Sophie Haywood picked up the assists as Duncan scored her sixth goal of the season.

South Alabama had four chances to extend their lead over the final 15 minutes of the first half but Fox saved all four efforts to keep it a one-goal match after 45 minutes.

Georgia State's best chance came in the 43rd minute when Taina Anglade fired a shot on goal. However, it was saved by Jaguar goalkeeper Sarah Hay.

  • South Alabama held a 9-4 shot advantage in the first half but the Panthers took one more corner kick (3-2).

In the first 15 minutes of the second half South Alabama had four chances to extend their lead.

  • First Fox saved Nikki Shirtcliffe's effort in the 51st minute.
  • Five minutes later Charde Hannah fired a shot that deflected off the crossbar.
  • Fox then denied Duncan a second goal in the 59th minute.
  • Steffi Hardy then had a chance thirty seconds later but her header hit the crossbar.

Duncan fired another shot on goal in the 62nd minute but Fox again recorded the save to keep the score 1-0. Georgia State's next chance came in the 65th minute but Moore's effort was high. The Jaguars had one final shot on target in the 82nd minute but Fox made the save.

  • South Alabama saw out the final eight minutes to secure the 1-0 win.
  • Christa Fox finished with 10 saves on 22 shots faced.
  • 20 fouls were called in the match and three yellow cards were shown.
  • GSU's next match is Friday, Oct. 24 when the Panthers host Appalachian State at the GSU Soccer Complex.
  • Then Georgia State host Texas State on Sunday, Oct. 26 for senior day in the regular-season finally.
