No. 1 Pair Go 3-0 On Second Day at Siesta Key

Siesta Key, Fla. - The Georgia State sand volleyball team successfully wrapped up its pair play on the second day of the Fiesta on Siesta Key tournament in the warm 80-degree heat on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

Pairs Tournament

Georgia State's No. 1 and 2 pairs kicked off the day in the pairs tournament. The No. 1 flight of Katie Madewell and Lane Carico went undefeated on the day. The pair went 3-0, defeating teams from the College of Charleston, Florida Atlantic, and Florida Gulf Coast.

Madewell and Carico first defeated FAU's Jelena Jovanovic and Alessia Pizzocherri 21-10, 17-21, 15-7. They then went on to turn back Florida Gulf Coast 21-18, 21-17, followed by a win over Charleston 18-21, 21-12, 15-13.

The Panthers' No. 2 flight of Jansen Button and Sara Olivova went 0-3 on their day. They first lost to Louisiana-Monroe's Tanya Sukach and Zuzana Markova 21-11, 21-13. They then lost a tough three-setter to Florida Gulf Coast's Brooke Kohler and Brittany Muse 19-21, 24-22, 15-10. In their final match of the day, they fell to Florida State's Aurora Newgard and Katherine Plessy 21-11, 21-19.

Pool Tournament

Georgia State's No. 3 pair of Milani Pickering and Katelyn Rawls went an undefeated 3-0 in Fiesta Cup pool play, where teams played one set to 25, win by two points.

GSU's  No. 4 pair of Alexis Elmurr and Molly Smestad went 2-1 in pool play.

The No. 5 pair for the Panthers, Karlee Kavanaugh and Alexis Townsend, went 0-3 in their Fiesta Cup pool play matches.

The Panthers' No. 6 pair of Nikki Senopoulos and Kaitlynn Hufstetler went 1-2 in pool play. The duo also won several rounds in bronze-level bracket play before falling to College of Charleston.

Sunday

Georgia State's pairs will continue to play in bracket matches Sunday. Carico and Madewell, along with Olivova and Button, will continue on in the single-elmination pairs bracket, either in the gold or silver bracket.

Georgia State's other pairs will play in the invitational tournament. The invitational tournament will continue to be one set to 25 points, no cap.

Play is scheduled to start at approximately 8:30 a.m. and conclude around 2 p.m.
