Women?s Soccer Wins Overtime Thriller Over Troy 2-1

ATLANTA - Ashley Nagy scored two goals to lead the Georgia State women's soccer team to a dramatic 2-1 overtime win against Troy Sunday afternoon at the GSU Soccer Complex. The match was the Panthers final home game of the season and they are now 4-8-1 overall and 2-3 in the Sun Belt Conference.

In the first 10 minutes, GSU forced Trojan goalkeeper Madison Winter to make a pair of saves on attempts by Nikki Fedele and Lauren Harriman. Georgia State goalie Brie Haynes was called upon to make her first save in the 16th minute on Abby Reynolds shot.

In the 37th minute, GSU grabbed a 1-0 lead on Nagy's third goal of the season. Alyssia Feronti sent a free kick into the box that Nagy headed towards the far post. Then, the ball deflected off a Trojan defender and into the back of the net past Winter to give the Panthers the lead.

At the half, Georgia State held the edge in shots (7-5) and Troy took the only corner kick during the first 45 minutes of play.

The teams went on the attack early in the second half forcing both keepers to make a save inside the first 10 minutes of play. GSU nearly doubled their lead in the 53rd minute, but Jordan Young's shot was just wide of the left post.

Beginning in the 62nd minute, Nagy fired two shots on goal over an eight minute span, but Winter was able to make both saves to prevent the Panthers from extending their lead.

In the 88th minute, Troy was able to tie the score 1-1 on Abby Reynolds fifth goal of the season. The Trojans were pushing everyone forward in search of a tying goal. After a GSU foul, Winter sent a free kick into the box that deflected to Reynolds. She was then able to fire a dipping shot over Haynes' head and under the crossbar to tie the match.

After 90 minutes, the teams were still tied and the match headed into overtime. During regulation, Georgia State outshot Troy (14-11) and both teams took one corner kick.

Through nine minutes of extra time both teams created chances but neither was able to beat the goalkeeper.

GSU finally broke through to score with only 37 seconds to play. Young pass a ball over the top of the Trojan defense to Nagy, who was able to slot it into the bottom right corner past Winter one-on-one.

Georgia State's Brie Haynes gets the win to improve to 4-8-1 this season. She finished with three saves on 11 shots faced. Troy's Madison Winter falls to 3-2 after the loss, and she recorded seven saves on 14 shots.

GSU will travel to Arkansas for a pair of matches on Friday and Sunday. First the Panthers will battle the Trojans of UALR at 8 p.m. ET on Friday and then they will face Arkansas State at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday.
