GEORGIA STATE HEAD COACH TRENT MILES
OPENING STATEMENT: “Hat’s off to Appalachian State. We got beat by a better football team today. They are one of the top teams in the conference and they completely controlled us today. We weren’t able to move the ball on offense and couldn’t stopped any of their throwing when they attacked our perimeters.”
About App State’s Offense Throwing the Ball Deep: “We talked about it all week. They ran the ball so much and there wasn’t anything they did today that we didn’t prepare for all week. We went into today talking about them throwing the ball; they run the football 86 percent, so what happens is you flip your tendencies and we had a plan for it and weren’t able to execute it.”
On App State making GSU’s passing game difficult: “They did what they do. They played us off and weren’t going to let us get behind them. They really gave Donovan (Harden) and Robert Davis a lot of room so we tried to get to the underneath stuff and they did a really good job of playing defense. They squeezed on the underneath routes; they can give pressure with four guys and don’t have to blitz every time to give pressure and they took advantage of it.
About GSU defense: “ Our defense played well against the run. We knew they run the ball well. I thought our guys did a good job in certain situations for the most part.”
Appalachian State Head Coach Scott Satterfield
OPENING STATEMENT: “Number one, just really proud of how our guys came out and responded this week, particularly our defense. We played a team last week that was two tight ends power defense, and this week the team spread it out, and we had great respect for the quarterback and what they do passing the ball wise and the guys did a great job defensively to hold those guys back. Offensively, I was proud of those guys the way we hit some balls down the field; we were not able to do that last week and to do that tonight, we had to because they were loading up the blocks and trying to stop our run and limit Marcus Cox of what he can do. Other guys have to make plays and receiving players like Malachi Jones and Bobo Beathard had to show what they could do.”
About the defense Georgia State played: “Yeah, I mean they have been playing that this year and playing some man coverage on the outside. They have been holding up, and I think the secondary is pretty good. Their safeties really came down and made tackles. We were just trying to isolate some guys on matchup on the outside edge and our guys made some plays tonight and was different offensively.
About the type of players and player makers App. State has: "We got a bunch of unselfish players; that is the way our program is built. Guys being unselfish, and we are going to take what defense gives us offensively, and tonight it was throwing some football and making defensive plays there. That’s the way we have been able to win some games.
About App. State Defense: “Well, it’s the way we prepare each and every week. It starts with the coaches coming up with a great game plan, and we wanted to mix up the coverages tonight. I think if you line up and just play straight up defense, you are going to get in trouble with him (N. Arbuckle) because he has a big time arm, and we played great coverage tonight, zone, blitz and played zone and we blitzed and played man behind. We gave him different looks and get to him a little bit…”
