A pair of meets in Birmingham, Ala. await the 28 members of the Georgia State indoor track and field team this weekend.
On Friday, the Panthers will compete in the UAB Blazer Invitational at the Birmingham indoor CrossPlex. This Friday event will include approximately 20 colleges, along with pro track clubs and individuals. Among the colleges sending individuals are Georgia, Florida State, Troy, USF, UAB, Tulane, Samford and Kennesaw State. Pros include some athletes who have earned Olympic medals or competed in Olympics. The 16-year old sprinter from Conyers, Ga, (Candace Hill) that is the only high school sprinter to break 11 seconds will make her pro debut in this event.
On Saturday, GSU will compete in a 10-team meet at the same CrossPlex. Both meets do not include the exact same events of competition. GSU has competitors entered in 11 events on Friday and 12 events on Saturday.
Leading the way for Georgia State are Sun Belt outdoor Most Outstanding Performers in track sprinter Ravin Gilbert and field thrower LaPorscha Wells. All-Conference cross country runner Stephanie Berger leads GSU's group in those events. Thrower Alysiah Whittaker also qualified for the NCAA Preliminary Meet last year. Long jumper Katherine Randolph set a school indoor record in her event last week at ETSU's Meet.
“We will expect and look for continued individual improvement as we work towards our best at the Sun Belt Indoor Championships on Feb. 22-23 at this Birmingham CrossPlex,” head coach Chris England said.
Live results will be available through the timing company.
