Baseball Adds Linebacker Hogan, European Players

ATLANTA- The Georgia State baseball team has announced the addition of three players to its 2012 roster, including Panther football standout Mark Hogan.

A two-sport athlete in high school in Massachusetts, Hogan has started two seasons for the football Panthers at linebacker, recording the second-most tackles in school history.

He joins the GSU baseball team as an outfielder, where he excelled at Sudbury-Lincoln (Mass.) High School. He helped lead the team to state championships in 2005 and 2007, finishing with a career .363 batting average. He has two seasons of eligibility on the diamond.

The Panthers have also added two talented European players to the roster this spring.

Pitcher Max Schmitz, a 6-foot-7 right-hander from Bonn, Germany, and Roy Seltenrijch, an infielder from Holland, both figure to appear with GSU this season. Each has four years of eligibility and is enrolled at GSU this spring.

Schmitz has played for head coach Greg Frady on the German national team, pitching at the 2011 World Port Tournament in Rotterdam, Holland, then posting the lowest ERA on the German staff at the 2011 Baseball World Cup in Panama.

"These players are going to fit in well with what we're working towards at GSU," head coach Greg Frady says. "Having personally coached Max, I know that he has so much ability and his future looks so bright, as it does for each of these young men."

The Panthers open the season with a four-game home series against Western Illinois of the Summit League, beginning Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.

GSU looks to reach its fourth-straight Colonial Athletic Association tournament in 2012 and capture its second conference crown in four seasons.
