Carney Named GSU Student-Athlete of the Week

Women's tennis standout Angel Carney is the Georgia State Student-Athlete of the Week.

The junior from Dallas, Ga., capped an outstanding season by winning her 17th straight singles match to tie the Georgia State record for consecutive victories in a season.

At the Sun Belt Conference Championships, Carney won her quarterfinal and semi-final matches at No. 4 singles in straight sets, and she also picked up a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles in Georgia State's win over Louisiana in the quarterfinal match.

After helping the Panthers to a remarkable turnaround season in 2022, Carney was honored as the Sun Belt Conference Player to Watch and was named to the All-Sun Belt second team for both singles and doubles. Her strong play in singles and doubles helped the Panthers to a 17-6 record--an improvement of 15 wins over 2021--and a share of the Sun Belt regular-season title.
