Another Freshman All-America Honor for Merrigan

ATLANTA – Georgia State center fielder Josh Merrigan was a second-team selection to the 2013 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-American Team, announced Monday by the organization.

Last week, Merrigan was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team, selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

A Marietta, Ga., native and Walton High School graduate, Merrigan enjoyed the most productive freshman season in Georgia State history with a .353 batting average, 84 hits, 52 runs scored and 36 runs batted in. He belted 15 doubles, five triples and four homers and was 12-for-12 on stolen bases.

As leadoff hitter, he sparked a Georgia State offense that ranks third nationally in batting average (.321) and fifth in scoring (7.7 runs per game), helping the Panthers to a 35-21 record.

Merrigan was named Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year – the first for the GSU program -- and was tabbed to the All-CAA second team and the CAA All-Rookie team. He also earned three CAA Rookie-of-the-Week honors.

Merrigan is one of Georgia State's two Freshman All-America honorees, along with pitcher-infielder Matt Rose, who made the Louisville Slugger team as a utility player.
