Several Top 10 Finishes For GSU in Birmingham

Birmingham, Ala. — Three representatives from the Georgia State track and field squad finished second in their respective events during the two day Birmingham Invitational held Jan. 25-26.

During the first day of competition, sophomore Tyler Tomy placed second in the men's 5,000m race with a time of 15:43.26. On day two, sophomore Valentin Poncelet ran 8:19.73 to finish second in the men's 3,000m and senior Danyel Mitchell was the runner-up in the women's 800m with 2:16.82.

The 2011 CAA rookie of the year, Tamara Moore won her heat of the women's 60m hurdles and went on to place fourth in the finals of the event with a time of 8.91. Moore also accounted for one leg of the GSU 4x400m relay team that placed 10th and had a time of 3:59.49.

A total of ten individual Panthers and two relay teams finished in the top ten competitors of their events, including four during the men's and women's sides of the 5,000m.

Freshman Austin Boetje (16:08.70) finished fifth the men's 5,000m, while Jennifer Rubel (18:32.72) and Alison Bishop (19:06.55) were fifth and seventh, respectively for the women.

Teammates Anna Sinclair and Kacee Houle finished consecutively in the women's 3000m race, with Sinclair (10:24.33) landing in eight place and Houle (10:34.36) coming in ninth. Senior Chris Harper also competed in the men's 3,000m and finished eight with a time of 8:52.02.

Junior Kesean Henderson performed well, despite being the only field competitor for the Panthers. She earned 11th place in the women's weight throw with a best toss of 14.49m (47-6.50).

An All-CAA hurdler last season, Kasey Rollins qualified for the finals in the men's 60m hurdles, where his time of 8.45 netted him 11th place.

Mitchell and Houle made up half of the women's distance medley relay, which placed sixth overall with a time of 12:54.66.

The Panthers return to Birmingham once more during the indoor season for the Vulcan Invite on Feb. 10-11. Georgia State already competed at the CrossPlex during the UAB Blazer Invite on Jan. 12-13.
