Homers Propel Panthers Past Towson, 4-1 (9)

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Lily Skelton belted a game-tying home run in the seventh inning and then Lauren Jones and Paige Nowacki homered in the ninth inning as Georgia State stayed alive at the CAA Championships with a 3-1 exra-innings victory over Towson Thursday at the Hofstra Softball Stadium.

Georgia State (36-18) now faces James Madison at approximately 3:30 p.m. Earlier today the Dukes fell to top-seeded Hofstra, 8-1. The winner of the GSU-JMU game then advances to Friday's championship round and would have to defeat Hofstra twice.

Freshman McCall Langford tossed a complete-game four hitter to earn the win for the Panthers, improving to 15-4 on the season.

Facing Towson ace and first-team all-CAA pitcher Kate Lingmai (12-11), the Panthers entered the seventh inning down 1-0. After Jones made the first out, Skelton hit the 1-0 pitch over the centerfield fence to tie the game at 1-1. The round-tripper was her ninth of the season and the 25th of her career, good for second in GSU history.

With one out in the ninth, Jones homered down the left field line to give the Panthers their first lead. It was Jones' ninth of the season and first since April 10 against Delaware. After a walk by Skelton, Nowacki followed with a two-run homer to center, her fourth of the season and first since March 5, putting Georgia State ahead, 4-1. The Panthers threatened for more after back-to-back singles by Rachel Cunningham and Rebecca Roles, but Cunningham was thrown out at third base, and Lauren Fetters grounded out to end the inning.

Stef Streets managed a one-out single for Towson in the bottom of the ninth, but Langford struck out Mindy Bean and then got Andrea Stevenson to ground out to end the game.

The Tigers scored their lone run in the second inning. Bean singled with one out and then stole second as Stevenson was striking out. Joyce Delp delivered an RBI-single to plate Bean.

The game marked the second extra-inning game in the CAA Tournament history for GSU. The other was last year's thrilling 12-inning victory over No. 1 seed Hofstra.

Towson finishes its season at 33-23.
